On December 5, 2017, RHA Commissioners welcomed 13 youth from Oakbrook and Glenside Homes to their monthly meeting, in recognition of their winning submissions to the annual RHA Energy Savings Poster Contest. Since 2010, RHA has been working in partnership with Olivet Boys & Girls Club to promote the agency’s commitment to responsible energy consumption.
Each fall, RHA employees meet with club members and staff to discuss ways in which youth and families can make a difference in conserving water and electric. “We can install water-savings devices with all the best intentions”, said Dave Talarico, Maintenance Superintendent, “but unless our residents are on board with the program, we can only go so far.” Following the educational sessions, youth are invited to submit posters describing different ways that families can contribute to responsible usage. Themes from this year’s submissions including turning off the water while brushing your teeth, turning off and unplugging electronics when not in use, and hanging clothing outside to line-dry.
The 2018 grand-prize winner, Angelina Quiñones of Oakbrook Homes, reminds us to Let Light Bulbs Dream by turning off our lights when they are not in need. Each winner received a gift card from Target. Youth participants and Resident Council volunteers will make their way through the agency’s eight public housing developments over the coming weeks, going door-to-door with their educational message, to ring in the New Year, spreading the message that
