When Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico (PR) in September, RHA employees – many of whom with affected family of their own – knew that a call-to-action was in order.
Staff joined forces with Centro Hispano and the United Way of Berks County to consider what the agency could bring forward for those with an urgent need for safety. Fast-forward to today: RHA has been successful in implementing a temporary policy to allow for visitors from PR to remain with family or friends beyond the usual 30-day per year limit, as they work towards relocation, or await improvements to their island homes that will allow for their secure return.
Residents with sufficient space in their homes have been permitted to make additions to their households, with some flexibility in the usual application process. Still others – more than 25 at the time of this writing – have been assisted through the agency’s Housing Choice Voucher Program, having brought their own voucher with them, and are now finding a new home in our Reading community.
