In today’s eco-conscious world, businesses and institutions are continually seeking ways to reduce operational costs and environmental impact. A strategy that RHA is employing is to replace an aging central boiler plant with more energy-efficient natural gas boilers at the Glenside Homes community. This transition not only offers significant financial savings but also contributes to a greener, more sustainable future.
Built in 1939, the Glenside complex currently relies on a central plant with three gas-fired boilers that provide heat and hot water through a system installed in the late 1980s. The new system will install two boilers in each building, offering redundancy and extended life expectancy through cycling. Additionally, each building will have two indirect hot water tanks that use heating water from the boilers to heat the tank water, with extra insulation being installed throughout the complex.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Capital Fund, and supported in part by rebates from UGI Utilities’ Save Smart Program, this multi-year efficiency project will impact 46 garden-style apartment buildings, consisting of 400 units, as well as the administration building and maintenance shop.
