The HUD Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) has spent recent years updating housing inspection standards across the U.S. The goal is to ensure increased resident safety and better housing conditions, with an emphasis on unit interiors.
In 2022, Reading Housing Authority (RHA) proactively volunteered to participate in HUD’s pilot inspections for the newly established standards, known as NSPIRE. All three RHA campuses were selected for inspections, which were conducted in the fall of 2022. These inspections provided valuable insights for achieving compliance. We are proud to report that RHA passed all sample inspections with excellent results.
By 2024, after two revisions of the standards, RHA underwent official NSPIRE inspections at our North Campus (Hensler Homes) and South Campus (Oakbrook Homes), achieving scores of 92% and 84%, respectively. These scores earned us “High Achiever” status. Additionally, having a HUD representative join one inspection offered valuable feedback to further enhance our practices.
