Reading Housing Authority (RHA) is proud to announce the official opening of Oakbrook Recreation Park, a major investment in outdoor recreation and community engagement for residents of Oakbrook Homes and the greater Reading community.
Located as part of the Oakbrook Center for Community Services (OCCS), this first phase of the upgraded park represents a $1.4 million project funded through the City of Reading using federal Community Development Block Grant funds. The revitalized recreational space is designed to support youth athletics, neighborhood programming, and family-friendly activities for years to come.
“We are incredibly grateful to our partners at the City of Reading,” said Stacey Keppen, RHA President & CEO. “Without their support, this project would have been delayed while funding was pursued through other channels.”
The centerpiece of the newly opened park is a fully modernized baseball field featuring dugouts, equipment storage, outfield and foul-line fencing, foul poles, an electronic scoreboard, an announcer’s booth, and accessible spectator seating. The upgraded field is expected to become a hub for youth baseball and community sporting events.
The park’s basketball court has also undergone significant improvements, including resurfacing and the addition of new bleachers to support future clinics, leagues, and tournaments.
Beyond athletics, Oakbrook Recreation Park now offers expanded green space and outdoor amenities designed to encourage recreation and community gathering. Visitors can enjoy mature trees, a walking path, benches, and a picnic grove featuring three eight-seat picnic tables and charcoal grills. In the coming weeks, a concession stand will become available, allowing sports and event organizers to provide refreshments during activities and tournaments.
The park hosted its first official baseball game on Thursday, May 14, at 4:00 p.m. in partnership with the Olivet Boys & Girls Club. Together with Leyenda 21 Baseball, the organizations are inviting youth to register for summer baseball programming.
RHA also announced that the final phase of the Oakbrook Recreation Park project remains on schedule for completion in fall 2026. These improvements will include a new playground, a pavilion, and restroom facilities. A dedicated playground area will support programming for the Patton Avenue Learning Center, operated by Opportunity House, allowing the center to expand services for local children. These final additions are being made possible through the support of U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan.
In addition to recreational programming, RHA is encouraging local agencies and nonprofit organizations to explore opportunities to provide services and community programs at the park and OCCS campus.
