Transforming Highrise Living: The Role of Digital Message Boards

In the dynamic environment of a housing highrise, communication is key to maintaining a cohesive, well-informed community. Traditionally, printed notices and bulletin boards have served this purpose, but these methods are being replaced by more innovative solutions: digital message boards. These modern platforms are revolutionizing residential management, making communication more efficient and fostering greater community engagement in highrise living, while reducing our carbon footprint through the amount of paper used to communicate to residents living in over 575 apartments.

Several years ago, Reading Housing Authority (RHA) began exploring the idea of installing digital message boards in highrise lobbies, particularly in the spaces above the elevators where residents often gather as a “captive audience.” This daily congregation presents a unique opportunity for management to communicate important updates.

However, due to the prohibitive costs at the time, the idea was shelved—until the Resident Services Department Manager had a conversation with Jhaisa Castillo, Community Engagement Specialist at Highmark Wholecare.   RHA had previously partnered with  Highmark Wholecare to bring a very successful mobile dental service and wellness fair to residents and had worked with Highmark Wholecare on bringing other health related programs and services to RHA residents. Highmark Wholecare is a leader in the community in providing Medicare and Medicaid health insurance including additional services such as prescription coverage, dental care, vision care and health related education to live a healthier lifestyle.

Through this collaboration and the generosity of Highmark Wholecare, RHA was able to install digital message boards in all five highrise buildings, transforming the way communication is relayed to residents.

These 24-hour communication hubs now provide regular reminders about critical information, from resident meetings and social events to wellness education and community programs. Ultimately, digital message boards are transforming RHA highrise living. By offering real-time updates, fostering community spirit, enhancing safety, and promoting sustainability, these boards have become an essential tool for modern residential management. As the future of highrise living continues to evolve, digital message boards will play an increasingly crucial role in creating a more informed, connected, and harmonious community for all residents at RHA.
